A Treat for History Enthusiasts for This Year’s Notte Bianca and European Heritage Days

Heritage Malta has planned three consecutive days of treats for history enthusiasts for this year’s Notte Bianca and European Heritage Days.

On the 6th of October, at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, Jordan Sant will be delivering a lecture in English analysing the establishment of the Roman Republic as the major power in the Mediterranean during the period stretching between the conquest of Italy and the end of the second century BC, a period which saw Rome conquer most of the Mare Internum.

The lecture, which is being organised as one of Heritage Malta’s events marking European Heritage Days, starts at 18:00 and is entitled Roman Expansion in the Mediterranean. Tickets are free, but pre-booking is required as seats are limited. For Notte Bianca, on Saturday 7th October, Heritage Malta will be opening three of its Valletta sites after hours, with free admission and no pre-booking required. The National Museum of Archaeology, MUŻA – the National Community Art Museum, and the Grand Master’s Palace including the Palace Armoury will welcome visitors from 18:00 until late at night, offering a journey through time from prehistory to the present.

This special weekend will continue on Sunday 8th October at the Gran Castello Historic House, within the Ċittadella in Gozo. Marking this year’s European Heritage Days as well as the 40th anniversary since its opening as a folklore museum, the Gran Castello Historic House will be open from 09:00 till 17:00 with free admission and no pre-booking required.

Families can make a day out of this special opening, as there will be activities ranging from live demonstrations of traditional trades related to weaving and lace-making, to traditional games for children. Guided tours will be offered in English and Maltese at 11:00 and 14:30 respectively, on a first come first served basis.
