Xjenza Malta and Heritage Malta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and career pathways through the integration of scientific concepts with historical narratives.

The MoU was signed by Silvio Scerri, Chief Executive Officer of Xjenza Malta, and Noel Zammit, Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Malta. Its terms seek to leverage the unique strengths of both organisations to develop innovative and engaging educational programmes, exhibitions, and workshops that will benefit the Maltese community.

Xjenza Malta, a government agency promoting STEM education and careers, operates the Esplora Interactive Science Centre housed at the ex-Royal Naval Hospital in Kalkara. Through its collaboration with Heritage Malta, also based at the former hospital, it has committed itself to create historical ‘journeys’. The shared premises of the two entities provide a great opportunity to leverage shared historical elements within the building.

The two entities will also collaborate in annual events, weekend activities for families, and culinary experiences through their respective subsidiaries, including Heritage Malta’s Taste History.

Both agencies recognize the potential for collaboration in virtual reality (VR) experiences, such as through Heritage Malta’s Digitisation unit via DigiArc, in collaboration with Esplora’s education team, and have committed themselves to exploring such possibilities.

Silvio Scerri said that, “This collaboration represents a unique opportunity to integrate STEM education with Malta’s rich cultural heritage. By combining our strengths, we can create innovative educational programmes that inspire curiosity and exploration in both science and history.”

Noel Zammit remarked that, “Heritage Malta is deeply committed to preserving and promoting our nation’s rich cultural heritage. This collaboration is a significant step towards not only preserving our history but also making it relevant and accessible to future generations.”

The agreement also outlines plans for staff exchanges and career orientation programmes, as well as mutual collaboration and support in accessing Horizon Europe Funds, especially under the Culture, Creativity, and Inclusive Society cluster. The agreement is valid for three years, subject to renewal.
