Curatorial
Curatorial
Heritage Malta’s various curatorial departments are responsible for the management of all cultural and natural assets entrusted to the national agency, be they sites, buildings, collections, and specimens or artefacts. This is done according to the Cultural Heritage Act and international conventions.
Heritage Malta’s curatorial departments are the cornerstone of the agency.
Their primary role is to safeguard and curate its assets, ensuring they are maintained and conserved according to the latest principles of best practice.
They also promote knowledge about them, make them accessible and encourage their sustainable enjoyment.
Curators therefore develop connoisseurship and interpret the cultural or natural resources, manage inventories or catalogues, publish original research, and collaborate in the organisation of exhibitions, lectures, seminars, heritage trails, education programmes and other such cultural events.
Curators also collaborate with other local and international institutions, such as the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and UNESCO, develop management plans for sites in their remit and lead projects related to accessibility and interpretation, striving to engage communities in the stewardship of their heritage.
