To mark summer solstice, Heritage Malta will once again be organizing a guided tour of the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples on Tuesday the 21st of June. These temples are well known for their archeological value however their particular location provide for a unique environment not found elsewhere within other prehistoric sites. Experiencing summer solstice within such an environment provides for an invaluable experience.
Summer solstice occurs once every year on the same day. Sunrise on the first day of each season underlines the relationship between the temples and celestial bodies. Although it is not known for certain whether these orientations were intentional, they are so systematic that this is very probable. In prehistoric agricultural societies, observation of the motion of the starts, the moon and sun could have been related to the changing seasons and times of planting and harvesting crops.
Tickets for this year?s solstice event can be purchased for the price of Euro 15.00 per person, while Heritage Malta members can buy their tickets for Euro 10.00 per person. Tickets, which will also grant access to the Visitor?s Centre within the Hagar Qim Park, can be bought from all Heritage Malta sites and museums.
