The results of research and investigations on Mattia Preti’sMartyrdom of St Catherine” to be presented at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Preti re discovered eflyer (2)Heritage Malta and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura will be presenting the results of the scientific investigations carried out on Mattia Preti’s Martyrdom of St Catherine of Alexandria undertaken jointly by the National Museum of Fine Arts together with Museo Civico di Taverna and Florence’s Opificio delle Pietre Dure.

The investigations have uncovered the existence of an earlier complete painting also by Mattia Preti depicting the Martyrdom of St Paul that was, at a later stage, transformed into the Martyrdom of St Catherine.

The speakers will be Sandro Debono, Heritage Malta’s senior curator of the National Museum of Fine Arts, David Frank Bugeja, conservator at Heritage Malta’s Conservation Division in Bighi and the team of restorers involved with this conservation project.

The scientific results shall also feature prominently in the exhibition ‘Mattia Preti: Faith and Humanity’ that will be hosted by the Palace State Rooms in Valletta from the 4th of May. Click here for more information.
