An Open Day organised by Heritage Malta on Sunday, 14th April, will offer the public free access and guided tours to Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum, re-enactments, activities for children, talks, and war-themed snacks.
Originally intended as a war machine, today Fort St Elmo serves as an impressive historical military building with unobstructed panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the surrounding towns and villages. The fort also hosts the National War Museum which houses a superb collection of artefacts that go back to prehistoric times.
Programme of activities:
Guided tours with the curator of Fort St Elmo: 9:15hrs (in Maltese) and 13:00hrs (in English). Meeting point – Piazza D’Armi.
Guided tours with the curator of the National War Museum: 11:00hrs (in English) and 14:45 (in Maltese). Meeting point – Piazza D’Armi.
Re-enactments at Piazza D’Armi: 9:30hrs – Legio X, 10:30hrs – Show of Arms, 11:30hrs – In Guardia, 12:30hrs – Show of Arms, 13:30hrs – Historical Re-Enactment Group of Malta, 14:30hrs – Battlefront.
Childrens’ activity ‘Make your own armour’ (for ages 5+): 10:15hrs and 14:15hrs. Location – Sacristy, next to Church of St. Anne. Children are to be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Talk by the George Cross Island Association ‘The Siege of 1940-1942’ at 15:30hrs in the Conference Room.
Exhibition: ‘Rations and food’ at the Church of St. Anne.
Food stalls including war-themed food at Casemates Area.
