Over 9,000 students will benefit from Heritage Malta and the Ministry for Education and Employment’s new Educational Programme. The Programme, launched this morning at MUŻA by Heritage Malta’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Noel Zammit, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry for Education and Employment, Mr Frank Fabri, and Heritage Malta’s Executive Director, Mr Mario Cutajar, covers the entire 2019 – 2020 scholastic year, and will include a variety of thematic activities throughout the year.
“Following this summer’s successful programme, this a new educational programme for the scholastic year was a natural continuation of our educational goals,” stated Mr Fabri. The summer programme will also be repeated next year, Mr Fabri announced.
All thematic activities are in line with the national school curriculum, as well as the recently revised Learning Outcome Frameworks. The Educational Programme will cover 25 different thematic activities, and will cater for students ranging from kindergarten level to post secondary level. Through the Programme, students will tackle not only history, but also maths, Maltese, physical activity, and drama.
“We hope that this multidisciplinary approach will show students – and parents – that museums are inclusive, accessible to everyone, and so much more than just historical sites,” emphasised Mr Mario Cutajar.
Activities offered will include mathematics in the Roman catacombs, Maltese language through history, and circuit training in Fort St Angelo. These initiatives are devised in close collaboration with Education Officers of the various subjects, most of whom attended the launch this morning. Various Heritage Malta curators will also deliver outreach programmes in schools, together with didactic resources distributed in every classroom. School children visiting particular museums and sites during organized school visits will also be given a specific free interactive workbook to be compiled on site.
Mr Noel Zammit, said: “School visits to Heritage Malta’s museums and sites are free of charge and last year around 16,000 students visited the Agency’s historical sites. Therefore, my appeal is directed to the teachers to increase these visits to Heritage Malta’s museums and sites. Last year around 7,500 students participated in these thematic activities and during this scholastic year we are expecting this number to increase to 9,000 students’’.
The Educational Programme throughout the scholastic year follows the successful summer programme organised by Heritage Malta between July and September.
