This year join Heritage Malta at the prehistoric site of Ħaġar Qim on 20th, 21st and 22nd (additional date) of June, and welcome Summer and the longest day of the year in unique way.
At Ħaġar Qim, watch as sunlight passes through an elliptical hole which opens onto a chamber on the northeast side of the structure. The sun’s rays form a crescent on a megalith in the chamber, transforming into a disc which finally sinks out of sight as though disappearing into the ground.
As the builders of the megalithic sites were farmers, the return of longer days, more light, and warmth would have likely been welcomed. Members of the community may have gathered to experience the changing seasons together during the Summer Solstice.
Following the event, they will also have the opportunity to visit the other megalithic site, the Natura 2000 landscape and the visitor centre on their own.
Meeting point: 05.30hrs outside the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park Visitor Centre.
Tickets: €30 per person, €20 for Heritage Malta members. Available from all Heritage Malta sites and museums, and online below:
