Dr Charles A. Gauci, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, presented a paper about the evolution of heraldry in Malta with reference to the nobility, at a meeting organised by the Real Asociación de Hidalgos de España.

The meeting, held in Madrid in conjunction with the International Commission for Orders of Chivalry, the Instituto Internacional de Genealogia y Heraldica and the Famiglie Storiche d’Italia, was attended by HE Daniel Azzopardi, Malta’s Ambassador to Spain. Also present were delegates from several countries.

Dr Gauci gave an overview of the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, set up by Parliament under the aegis of Heritage Malta. The office encourages the study of heraldry in Malta and grants and registers Arms for both Maltese and foreigners.

During the meeting, Dr Gauci was appointed to the board of the International Commission for Orders of Chivalry and admitted to two prestigious international institutions, namely the Spanish Instituto Internacional de Genealogia y Heraldica and the Istituto Araldico Genealogico Italiano (IAGI).
