During a press conference attended by the Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government José Herrera and Dr Lydia Abela, the spouse of the Prime Minister, Heritage Malta announced the winners of ‘Be The Artist’, an online competition launched in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The selected artistic submissions will be exhibited at MUŻA, the National Community Art Museum.
Between April and June, the ‘Be the Artist’ initiative called for artistic submissions from children aged 16 and under, in accordance to the various themes proposed by Heritage Malta. From prehistoric temples to traditional confections, Roman mosaics to art within MUŻA, Maltese and Gozitan children submitted over 260 artistic pieces.
“It is of great importance that we bring children and teenagers closer to the arts and cultural heritage,” emphasised Minister José Herrera. “The fact that the winning submissions will be exhibited inside MUŻA is a prestigious award in itself since their art will reach more people.”
Dr Lydia Abela explained how art is very important as it fosters a sense of creativity, innovation and responsibility. “Malta has great talent amongst children and young people that we should all be proud of,” stated Dr Lydia Abela, who stressed how we should continue to work towards greater accessibility of art for all, irrespective of age or social strata.
Noel Zammit, Heritage Malta CEO announced the renewal of Heritage Malta’s popular Student Passport Summer programme, increasing accessibility to the cultural heritage. “The programme will also include various artistic and physical activities within Heritage Malta’s sites,” explained Mr Zammit.
