Heritage Malta will open the fascinating Fort Delimara for a day of free guided tours and re-enactments on Sunday 16th October.

Fort Delimara was built between 1876 and 1878 to defend the approaches to Marsaxlokk Harbour and is a classic example of a Victorian coastal fortification. Amongst other attractions, the fort still houses four of the original six 38-ton rifled muzzle loading guns which are the last surviving examples in the world, still on their carriages in their original casemate emplacements. The fort remained operational until 1956. It was later used as a farm for more than 25 years, until it was placed under Heritage Malta’s protection in 2005.

Visitors at the open day will be able to appreciate the extensive works conducted by Heritage Malta within Fort Delimara during the past year. With the help of other organisations, thorough cleaning has been carried out in the underground sections and the parade ground. Several farm accretions, some of which were even dangerous, have been removed. These structures included animal pens. A new electricity and water system has been installed at the fort, and security is also being stepped up.

There will be eight tours and four re-enactments on the 16th October. Tour times will be as follows: 9:00am (in Maltese), 10.15am (in English), 11.00am (in Maltese), 12.15pm (in English), 1.00pm (in Maltese), 2.15pm (in English), 3.00pm (in Maltese), 4.15pm (in English). Re-enactment shows start at 9.45am, 11.45am, 1.45pm and 3.45pm. Each show will be part of the tour preceding and succeeding it.

Pre-booking is required for those who wish to take part in one of the guided tours. Tickets are available at any Heritage Malta museum or site, or online on heritagemalta.org/store. Donations towards the ongoing project to give a new lease of life to Fort Delimara may be made on site during the open day and would be greatly appreciated. Comfortable shoes are to be worn for the tours.
