Heritage Malta invites you to a public lecture by architect Mirco Azzopardi, titled ‘Saints, Fireworks and Urban Development: Malta’s Ongoing Negotiations – Jeremy Boissevain’s Malta Revisited through Contemporary Urban Transformation’. The lecture will be held on Thursday, 25th September, at 7:00pm at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu.
In the 1960s, anthropologist Jeremy Boissevain depicted Ħal Kirkop’s church, piazza and winding streets as anchors of cultural identity and social exchange, a delicate balance of compromise and bargain.
Today, Malta’s village cores face new negotiations: between heritage and development, identity and speculation, tradition and modern demands.
Linking to the current exhibition ‘A Legacy of an Anthropologist – The Jeremy Fergus Boissevain Archive’ at the Inquisitor’s Palace, Mirco Azzopardi will reflect on these shifting dynamics, inviting architects, anthropologists and the wider public to explore the architect’s role in shaping Malta’s future cultural, social, and political landscapes.
Admission is free, but pre-booking is required online at Store – Heritage Malta or at any Heritage Malta museum or site.
