Heritage Malta is pleased to announce the final edition of Museums by Candlelight for this year, promising an experience more magical than ever before. For the first time, this special evening event will take place across the historical towns of Rabat and Mdina, transforming their timeless sites into a luminous stage of history, art, and culture.
On Saturday 20th September, from 7pm until midnight (last admission at midnight), visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore three exceptional sites: Domvs Romana, St Paul’s Catacombs, and the National Museum of Natural History, all beautifully illuminated by candlelight and animated by live performances, music, and an enchanting atmosphere.
For a donation of just €3, visitors will enjoy exclusive access to all three heritage sites. Each site will be bathed in the soft, flickering glow of candlelight and brought to life with live music, captivating performances, and an atmosphere that promises to be truly unforgettable.
At St Paul’s Catacombs, guests can explore Malta’s earliest and most extensive evidence of Christianity within underground chambers dating back to Punic, Roman, and Byzantine times. Here, visitors will also have the one-time opportunity to view a replica of the George Cross – a powerful emblem of Malta’s bravery and resilience – just days after the celebration of the 83rd anniversary of its public award ceremony. It also reminds us of how the catacombs were used as shelters during the Second World War. Adding further magic to the atmosphere, the acoustic duo Jodi & Ian will be performing soulful harmonies among the candlelit pathways.
A short stroll away, the Domvs Romana offers a window into Malta’s Roman past. Passing through its iconic 1920s portico, visitors step back in time, discovering exquisite mosaics and interesting artefacts that reveal the refined lifestyle of a Roman aristocratic family. The elegant notes of harpist Laetitia Troisi De Menville will fill the villa’s timeless spaces, creating a serene musical backdrop to this journey into antiquity.
Meanwhile, the National Museum of Natural History, housed within the baroque 18th-century Vilhena Palace, presents fascinating displays including a mummified Nile crocodile, a fossilised crocodilian head unearthed in Gozo, and a tooth from the extinct giant white shark. Complementing these wonders of nature, Kathy the Violinist will enchant audiences with her evocative violin melodies.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, as the event involves walking from one venue to another and exploring each location on foot.
Please note that tickets are non-refundable.
