As part of Mosta Open Weekend – Vetrina tal-Lokalità, Ta’ Bistra Catacombs will be open to the public free of charge on Sunday the 30th of March between 4pm and 7pm, and on Monday the 31st of March between 10am and 4pm. Last admission for both days is 30 minutes before closing time.
Ta’ Bistra Catacombs form the largest complex of Roman tombs outside the ancient city of Melite (modern Mdina and Rabat). Dating to the early Christian period, around the 4th century AD, the site preserves characteristic burial features such as arched window tombs and triclinia. Originally comprising 16 groups with nearly 60 tombs in total, the complex was first excavated in 1933 and again in 2013-2014. The catacombs are set within an ancient quarry that underwent three phases of extraction, with one phase predating the burials themselves, highlighting the site’s long history of use and adaptation.
Note: Admission to Ta’ Bistra Catacombs on the 30th of March will only be free of charge from 4pm till 7pm. Normal admission rates will apply during the rest of the day.
