Experience one of the most turbulent and lesser-known chapters of Malta’s history at Fort St Angelo on Sunday 8th March, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta will recreate a garrison day by a French unit – the 19ème demi-brigade d’infanterie de ligne – bringing to life the dramatic French occupation of 1798–1800.
Though brief, this period reshaped Malta’s destiny. Napoleon’s arrival sparked sweeping reforms and rising tensions, leading to a Maltese uprising and a two-year blockade that ultimately paved the way for British rule. Visitors will see soldiers standing guard, conducting military drills, maintaining weapons, preparing food, and performing daily camp duties, all in highly accurate historical uniforms and authentic equipment.
The event takes place within Fort St Angelo, the medieval stronghold later turned headquarters of the Order of St John, a key fortress in the Great Siege of 1565, and a major naval base until 1979, offering a vivid glimpse into Malta’s layered history.
Tickets are at normal admission rates and can be prebooked online, purchased at any Heritage Malta store, or bought at the door on the day. Heritage Malta members and senior and student passport holders enter for free.
