Get to know better the small island of Filfla, on an intriguing Heritage Malta extra tour on Sundays 21st August led by Senior Curator of the Natural History Unit, John J Borg, who has been studying the history and natural history of the island since 1982.

How did this island form? From where did it get its name? Is it true that there was a chapel on Filfla? Why did the island attract pirates? How did it end up as a bombing target during? Which animals and plant species live on Filfla nowadays? Why has the island been declared a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site?

Participants will enjoy a  boat-ride while listening to these stories and many others. We will also keep a lookout for any seabirds, turtles and dolphins that we may encounter on our trip. The boat will leave from the Ferries, Sliema and head towards Filfla, passing along the eastern and southern coast of Malta.

There will be no disembarkation on the island and no swimming will take place around Filfla. On its way back, the boat will make a stop next to Delimara, for those who would like to swim, and then return to Sliema.

Those attending are required to bring food and drinks with them. A bar will be available on the boat with refreshments only. Participants are recommended to apply sunblock and wear a hat. Children should be supervised at all times.

Meeting point: 09:30 hrs, ‘Luzzu Cruises’ point at Sliema Ferries (opposite Marks & Spencer’s).

Time of tour: 10:00 to 15:00 hrs. The tour may be cancelled in the case of bad weather.

Heritage Malta members will be asked to present their Membership cards when boarding.
