Catherine The Great – Russian queen who gave a gold medal to a Maltese boat builder who repaired her warship at Bormla.

Once again the Friends of the Malta Maritime Museum will be organising their annual seminar at the Malta Maritime Museum on Sunday 10th June. Entrance to the seminar is free and open to the general public. This year the theme will be Historic Boats and Ships at Malta.

Three guest speakers will be at hand to share their knowledge of maritime related themes:

– Mr. Joe Caruana will talk about the “Ship of the Order of St. John captured by the French in 1798?

– Mr. Micheal Cassar “From Plymouth to Pieta ? HMS Hibernia, l-Arbalja in the Grand Harbour, Malta?

– Mr. Liam Gauci “Memories carved in wood ? stories and the lives of Maltese shipwrights?

The seminar will start at 09.30hrs and on the day, Mr. Micheal Cassar will be launching his new book about HMS Hibernia. HMS Hibernia’s figurehead forms part of the Malta Maritime Museum collection and weighs in at 3.5 tons of wood making it the largest figure head in the Mediterranean. All proceedings of said book will go towards the Friends of the Maritime Museum.

All nautical enthusiast surely cannot miss this opportunity to learn more about Malta?s rich maritime past. Furthermore, guests will have the opportunity to join the Friends of the Maritime Museum, the first ever established museum group in Malta.
