‘Spanish Art in Baroque Malta – A renewed understanding’

A day seminar in November to review latest research on Spanish art in Baroque Malta.

‘Spanish Art in Baroque Malta – A renewed understanding’ is the subject of a day seminar jointly organised Heritage Malta and the Spanish Embassy in Malta. The seminar will be held at the Aula Magna, Old University building, Valletta on Thursday 6th November, 2014.

The Seminar is being held with the collaboration of Museo Nacional del Prado (Madrid), the History of Art Department of the University of Valencia, the Institute for Baroque Studies and the Department for Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Malta.

The study of Spanish art in Malta has been increasingly attracting attention over the past years. Spanish art works have been identified, studied and published. The patronage of Spanish art, including imports, is also better known. This seminar seeks to take stock of our knowledge of Spanish art in baroque Malta and explore potential new research paths on the subject. It also seeks to connect participating researchers and scholars working in this field.

Speakers include Sandro Debono (National Museum of Fine Arts, Heritage Malta); Antonio Espinosa Rodriguez (Curator Emeritus, National Museum of Fine Arts, Heritage Malta); Dr. Andres Ubeda (Head Curator for Italian and French 17th century paintings, Museo Nacional del Prado); Dr. William Zammit (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences, University of Malta); Dr. Marjorie Trusted (Senior Curator of Sculpture, Victoria and Albert Museum, London); Fr. Edgar Vella (Curator, Cathedral Museum, Mdina) and Dr. Luis Arciniega (History of Art Department, University of Valencia).
