On Sunday, 10th November, Heritage Malta, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, is inviting the public to Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum which will be open for free with an engaging programme of activities in commemoration of Remembrance Day.

Featuring as a highlight in a string of events organised by the Malta Tourism Authority to launch Malta as a premier military tourism destination, and on the eve of the day honouring those fallen in military service, this event will be offering visitors an immersive experience at this historic fort.

Visitors will be able to explore Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum free of charge, enjoying special activities that bring Malta’s military history to life. Pre-booked curatorial guided tours, live historical re-enactments, and a display of military vehicles will offer a hands-on journey through time. Adding to the wartime ambiance, the Malta Command – World War 2 Living History Group will perform drills and weapon demonstrations, providing an authentic WWII experience.

Highlights of the day include a spectacular flyover by the vintage Piper L-44 Grasshopper, weather permitting, at 1:00 pm. Coordinated by the Malta Aviation Museum, this rare display will soar over Fort St Elmo and the Grand Harbour, giving visitors an unforgettable glimpse into the past. Earlier in the day, the In Guardia troop will parade through the fort at 11:00 am, followed by a convoy of military vehicles arriving at 11:30 am. Malta’s underwater heritage will also be open for exploration through the Dive into History 360° virtual reality showcase, presented by Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage and Digitisation Units.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience two recent additions to the museum – the newly inaugurated ‘Submariners’ Walkway’ which pays tribute to the submariners who lost their lives off Malta or while serving from the island during the war, and the new display in the memorial, which features a recent donation of more than fifty medals of 11 officers from the Gatt family, who served in Maltese regiments along five consecutive generations for over 150 years.

Fort St Elmo will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with last admissions at 4:30 pm. Guided tours in Maltese and English are available for €5 and are to be pre-booked here www.heritagemalta/mt/store or at any Heritage Malta museum or site. Join us for a day that promises to be both educational and memorable.
