Mario Cutajar has been appointed Chairman of Heritage Malta, the National Agency for Museums, Conservation and Cultural Heritage.

During these past years, Mr Cutajar occupied the post of Executive Director on Heritage Malta’s Board of Directors and played a crucial role in bringing to fruition several initiatives by the agency. These included new sites such as Villa Guardamangia, Underground Valletta, Villa Frere and the Main Guard being placed under Heritage Malta’s wing. During the same period, the cultural heritage law was updated, a new vision for the agency was devised, and Heritage Malta’s mission was widened for its museums to be brought up to speed with current trends. Mr Cutajar also had an important role in the setting up of the Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit within Heritage Malta, which presently safeguards 17 underwater sites around the Maltese Islands.

A new board has also been appointed for Heritage Malta, an agency which Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, described as being at the very start of a new chapter whereby it is widening its vision and placing people at the very core of all its endeavours.

Mario Cutajar retired from the Public Service at the end of last month, following a 47-year-long career during which he worked in several departments and government entities, including Heritage Malta. Between March 2013 and May 2022 he was also Head of the Public Service.
