Heritage Malta’s Technology and Experience Development Unit (TED) collaborated in a public workshop organised by the Western Region and the University of Malta as part of the Interreg Italia-Malta CHORAL Project, offering participants immersive Virtual Reality heritage experiences.

The event, held in Rabat, explored cultural tourism from various perspectives, including accessibility, green mobility, and sustainable engagement with heritage sites. Participants explored how learning about culture can complement efforts towards reducing our carbon footprint.

The workshop opened with a short introduction and briefing by Karyn Scerri, Research Support Officer II and PhD student at the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development within the University of Malta, together with the President of the Western Region. Attendees then joined a guided walk around Rabat’s historic core, which highlighted the town’s rich heritage and its links to sustainable urban development.

Afterwards, the audience was guided through an interactive Virtual Reality session by Heritage Malta’s Technology and Experience Development Unit (TED) team. In this session participants experienced immersive reconstructions of cultural heritage sites – similar to those currently being developed under the Interreg Italia–Malta CHORAL project – of which Heritage Malta is a partner. The activity demonstrated how technologies such as 3D digitisation and VR can make heritage more engaging and accessible to diverse audiences.

Anthony Cassar, Head of the Technology and Digitisation Unit at Heritage Malta, remarked: “Events like this show how collaboration between regional authorities, academia, and heritage professionals can make cultural experiences more inclusive. The public’s enthusiastic response in Rabat reinforces the value of using technology to bring heritage closer to people.”

The CHORAL Project (Interreg Italia–Malta) brings together Maltese and Sicilian partners to develop new ways of communicating and experiencing cultural heritage through immersive technologies, digital storytelling, and cross-border collaboration.
