Heritage Malta has launched Tales of Kottonera, a new interactive portal about the Kottonera region that aims to provide an innovative way of exploring the rich history and culture of the three cities of Birgu, Bormla and Isla, as well as Kalkara.

The portal, developed by Heritage Malta in collaboration with Marketlink Ltd, is a treasure trove of resources, historical facts, lesser-known stories, and interesting curiosities about this iconic locality. Its content targets various audiences and ages – from children to tourists and history enthusiasts.

During the launch of Tales of Kottonera, Owen Bonnici, Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Council, remarked that, “This portal reflects our dedication to the preservation of cultural heritage and ensures that the stories of Kottonera reach a wider audience. It celebrates the architectural marvels and historical figures of this region, as well as the everyday life of those who shaped Malta’s identity across the centuries.”

Alison Zerafa Civelli, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, said that, “The launch of Tales of Kottonera strengthens our bond with this important region and makes our heritage more accessible to Maltese residents and foreign visitors. This portal is a fine example of how tales and technology can merge to inspire future generations.”

Heritage Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, Noel Zammit, observed that, “Through Tales of Kottonera, the agency is shortening the distance between the past and the present, while bringing to life the vibrant stories of Birgu, Isla, Bormla and Kalkara for all ages. Our aim is to provide an immersive and interactive experience that invites people to discover the roots of these extraordinary cities, and to celebrate the traditions and the resilience that define the people of the Kottonera region.”
