Heritage Malta has joined the Virtual Worlds Association (VWA), a European alliance established to steer technological transition whilst ensuring open, ethical, and human-centred digital environments across culture, education, industry, and society.

Virtual worlds are immersive digital environments powered by 3D and extended reality (XR) technologies, enabling interaction between digital and real-world objects, sites, and users in shared spaces.
The VWA was recently formed under the European Partnership on Virtual Worlds and Horizon Europe, with a clear mandate to accelerate the responsible development and adoption of immersive technologies across Europe. By bringing together leading industry players, academic institutions, research centres, and startups, the association aims to maximise the societal and economic benefits of virtual worlds while safeguarding openness, security, inclusivity, and trust.
By joining this alliance, Heritage Malta reinforces its role within a high-level European network actively shaping the future of virtual worlds. The agency will both benefit from cutting-edge European research and contribute its recognised expertise in large-scale digitisation, digital collections, and heritage interpretation.
This membership also opens new pathways for collaboration with universities, research bodies, and technology innovators to co-develop interoperable standards and scalable solutions that enhance public access and meaningful engagement with physical heritage sites and collections, through digital environments. As Malta’s national agency for cultural heritage, Heritage Malta is committed to ensuring that the country’s cultural legacy is strongly represented within Europe’s digital transformation.
The Agency’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Noel Zammit, stated: “Membership in the Virtual Worlds Association gives Heritage Malta a concrete platform to translate digital innovation into public value. Through this collaboration, we will work on practical applications of immersive technologies that expand access to our collections, support education and research, and create new, high-quality ways for local and international audiences to engage with Malta’s heritage – both onsite and online.”
This strategic step builds on Heritage Malta’s recent launch of the eMuseum platform, which significantly expanded public access to Malta’s national collection through a user-centred digital interface.
