Freedom Day at Fort St Angelo Marks 120 Years Since Royal Navy Handover

This year marks 120 years since Fort St Angelo was handed over to the Royal Navy in 1906 – a historic milestone that lends special significance to Freedom Day celebrations taking place at the fort on Tuesday 31st March. To mark the occasion, Heritage Malta will host a full programme of activities, alongside exceptional Regatta views and reduced admission rates for visitors.

The fort’s transfer to the Royal Navy on 8th December 1906 ushered in a new chapter in its long history. Serving as an Admiralty shore establishment, a Depot Ship, and later the Base Ship of the Malta Port Division, it was renamed HMS Egmont in 1912 and HMS St Angelo in 1933. Over the decades, it became the centre of British naval operations in Malta, with all remaining naval services consolidated there until its closure on 31st March 1979, becoming the last British military facility to shut down in Malta.

Running from 9:00am to 7:00pm, the programme of activities on 31st March allows visitors of all ages to explore the fort at their own pace. Free guided tours will highlight the fort’s role as HMS St Angelo, its strategic importance under British rule, and its endurance during intense Second World War bombardments, while also offering insights into daily life within this naval base.

In the creek below the fort, the Regatta races will unfold, offering visitors unrivalled panoramic views of the activity infolding across the Grand Harbour. A core Maltese tradition, the Freedom Day Regatta brings together skilled rowing teams from cities and villages across Malta in a spirited contest for the coveted Palju.

Throughout the day, children can take part in hands-on nautical- and naval-themed activities designed to spark curiosity and bring our islands’ maritime history to life. The Sea Cadets will further enhance the atmosphere, offering added colour and insight into the British period.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase on site, giving guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy the historic setting. Admission is set at a special reduced rate of €3.
