The timeless beauty and allure of Villa Frere have once again earned widespread recognition, as the renowned English publication Country Life features an in-depth article, accompanied by beautiful photographs of Villa Frere and its gardens.

The article shines a spotlight on the tireless efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers who, in June 2013, founded the Friends of Villa Frere organisation. Their main goal was to try to save what was left of the historic gardens and, where possible, restore them to a semblance of what they might have looked like in the past.

During the years following the establishment of the Friends of Villa Frere organisation, several positive developments took place, including an agreement with Heritage Malta in 2019. The national agency has become the official owner of this property but has handed over the administration to Friends of Villa Frere and is directly helping to protect the place. In addition, a Grade 1 scheduling for Villa Frere and its gardens was also carried out by the Planning Authority in 2020. These, together with the opening of the gardens to the public from time to time, have helped to raise awareness of the historical and cultural importance of Villa Frere.
